Infectious Disease Prevention & Health Safety
Protecting Our Community Together
At Futures Unlimited Community Integration Services, the health and safety of our participants, families, and staff is our highest priority. As a community-based day program, we are committed to maintaining a clean, safe, and responsive environment — and to following the public health guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and our partnering regional centers.
Our Approach to Infectious Disease Prevention
FUCIS maintains an active Infectious Disease Prevention Plan designed to minimize the risk of illness across all community-based and program activities. Our approach includes:
- Proactive hygiene practices — regular handwashing, hand sanitizer access, and routine cleaning and disinfection of program spaces and shared equipment
- Staff health and safety training — all team members complete training in infectious disease prevention, universal precautions, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as part of onboarding and ongoing professional development
- Health screening protocols — participants and staff are encouraged to stay home when feeling unwell, and we follow clear protocols for reporting and responding to symptoms or exposure
- PPE availability — masks, gloves, and sanitizing supplies are available at all FUCIS locations and during community-based activities
- Community-site partnerships — we coordinate with our internship sites, volunteer partners, and post-secondary institutions to ensure participants are supported in following each site’s health and safety practices
- Family and care provider communication — we maintain open, timely communication with families about any health-related updates that may affect participation
When Illness Occurs
If a participant or staff member experiences symptoms of a communicable illness — including but not limited to COVID-19, influenza, RSV, or other respiratory or gastrointestinal infections — FUCIS follows established protocols to:
- Support the individual in staying home and seeking appropriate care
- Notify families and care providers as needed
- Clean and disinfect affected areas in accordance with public health guidance
- Adjust service delivery to remote or virtual options when appropriate, so participation in goals and learning can continue safely
Continuity of Services
When in-person services are not possible due to illness or public health circumstances, FUCIS continues to support participants through:
- Remote learning delivered by the same Career Support Staff, using the same person-centered curriculum
- Individualized check-ins by phone or video to maintain connection, motivation, and progress
- Self-guided learning materials and supplies provided to support continued skill-building at home
- Person-centered planning continuity — every participant’s rights, preferences, and goals continue to guide service delivery, regardless of setting
Our Commitment
We will continue to monitor public health guidance, update our protocols as needed, and communicate openly with the participants and families who trust us. Health and safety are not a temporary response — they are part of how FUCIS operates every day.
